Our customer had been running an ageing IT hardware infrastructure. As it was approaching 10 years old and past end of life, it had been struggling to keep up with the business’ ongoing growth and system requirements.
The costs of maintaining the legacy hardware were also beginning to increase significantly, and with it the management of physical tape storage was becoming impractical.
In addition to looking for a practical solution to refresh its core infrastructure, the customer’s IT team also wanted to migrate some virtual servers back to the UK from a central data centre in Germany. This would require a significant increase in capacity of local servers and storage. This new environment also needed to be easy to maintain with limited resources.
The team had previously looked into the possibility of using hyperconverged systems due to their simplicity, low requirement for floor space, and lots more compute power from the servers. Added to this is the fact that management is resource-light, with the systems running themselves 90% of the time. All-in-all, their new systems needed to be scalable, and able to cope with the servers coming back from the data centre in Germany.
After extensive consultation with the PAV team, the customer selected the SimpliVity Hyperconverged solution from HPE.
The PAV team assisted with procurement of the system, and made the installation seamless. Because the system was running on a VMWare-based system already, this made the migration of servers to it simpler.
The customer also chose PAV’s disaster recovery service to ensure complete backup of core company data. In the event of an emergency situation, the PAV team are able to recover data much quicker than from tape or disk-based backups.
The main benefit of the new system to the customer’s IT team has been time savings on the general management and day-to-day administration. Migrations and backups have also been made a lot quicker, with other systems being capable of doing a similar job but that would have created more daily work.
