The importance of backup in a Modern Workspace

The importance of backup in a Modern Workspace

In our series of blogs about the Modern Workspace, we’re exploring how the best and most successful businesses of the present day are delivering the best and most efficient goods or services to their customers.

A lot of this culture is facilitated by the people in a business, but a well thought out technology strategy also plays a huge part in gaining a positive competitive edge in modern business. In our second blog we looked at how effective collaboration can be achieved in an increasingly remote business environment.

It’s time now to look at the increasingly central role of data in a modern organisation, and the crucial role – and additional value – that a good backup strategy can play in taking full advantage of that data.

Is data as important as you’re constantly being told it is?

We’re past the age in which ring binders and filing cabinets hold the crown jewels of a company – and certainly those that continue to thrive in the modern era. That’s not to say paper has disappeared entirely as we all know it hasn’t, but it’s become more of a note-taking tool rather than a custodian of a company’s vital data.

So with everything from sales forecasts to employee payroll information to customer data to the plans for your next product manifesting itself in various forms of data, modern businesses need a backup and recovery solution that can keep up with the company’s day-to-day running, and future aspirations.

And as important as they are, this requirement isn’t just based on cost saving and the need to comply with increasingly stringent data protection regulations. It’s based on the need to move away from point products that make management of data and backup unnecessarily cumbersome and costly. An effective modern backup strategy is one that is well-thought-out, and that looks at business data holistically and organises it by priority, retention requirement and accessibility.

Building the right foundations

We know from many of our own customers that modern business isn’t as simple as backing everything up to one cloud and knowing that everything is taken care of. In fact, 80% of companies are using multiple clouds today, so even if your business isn’t currently using more than one cloud, there’s a strong chance it will be in the not-too-distant future.

Given this, the best backup and recovery tools such as Commvault provide support for more than 40 cloud storage types, covering both public and private clouds. So in line with shifting your organisation’s emphasis to being a Modern Workspace, this flexibility to create a hybrid cloud environment where you can backup and recover data to, within and between clouds is one that can truly set that mindset in motion.

In addition, this holistic coverage of your organisation’s data enables the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms that optimise performance, analyse patterns and report on anomalies – all ideal foundations for an effective, efficient and cutting-edge Modern Workspace.

Based on our industry knowledge and with our experience of helping our customers deploy and use Commvault solutions, its benefits can be used to meet all your needs:

  • Multi-cloud backup
  • Application and database protection
  • Virtualisation
  • Endpoint protection
  • Disaster recovery
